New Jersey cards are local: most libraries serve people who live, work, or study in their own town or county, charge annual fees for outsiders, and honor only scattered county-to-county reciprocal agreements. Big consortia like BCCLS typically block digital access for non-resident cards, so each Libby catalog here usually requires genuinely qualifying for a member card.
The Libby landscape splits into five shared catalogs plus strong independents. eLibraryNJ is the biggest tent (Newark, Trenton, Mercer County, and dozens of Middlesex/Union/shore municipal libraries). eBCCLS covers the 70+ BCCLS towns in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties. Main Library Alliance pools Morris, Hunterdon, Warren, and nearby towns; PALS Plus pools the Passaic County cities; and the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative pools county systems like Camden, Gloucester, Cumberland, and Cape May. Cards worth hunting separately: the independent county systems (Ocean, Monmouth, Somerset, Burlington, Atlantic) plus Jersey City, Princeton, and Cherry Hill.
